Snapchat Assignment

I don’t use Snapchat too much. I like to live in the moment and I find that Snapchatting takes away from it. That being said I do like to put stuff mostly on my story just so I can show my friends what fun adventures I go on.

For the Snapchat assignment for next fall I came up with an idea and since it is somewhat complex I will try to explain it the best way possible. I think that each person should be partnered up (if an odd number then one partners with the teacher). For the purpose of easier explanation let’s call them partners 1 and 2. So on a certain day, just like in the Instagram assignment, each partner will go through their day and Snapchat what they are doing (the more descriptive the better).

Afterwards partner 1 will write a description of his/her day as well as partner 2’s day. She will exchange the description of partner 2’s day for the description partner 2 wrote about her day. Once partner 1 has her description of her day and her partner’s description of her day, she will make a post putting both descriptions of her own day and an analysis.

The purpose would be to see how what she perceives to have happened during the day differs from what others think when they see your snapchats.

I think that would be a cool way of really figuring out what other people think of you just through Snapchat, which is the main reason why people post on the app in the first place.

Janet Cardiff – Artist of the Week

Janet Cardiff works with a variety of media such as video, sound and audio. She is internationally known for her art tour walks. The way they work is the people follow her directions around a specific location.

Cardiff_Portrait

The audio she prerecords is not just her voice but sound effects are added to help with the mood. The walk is not just a guidance through a certain area but an experience of its own. Cardiff’s art has similar themes such as displacement desire and mystery.

The Dark Pool is an example of series of works. It consisted of a room that was dim and had speakers placed throughout it. There were different ancient objects throughout the room as well. Different audios of stories would play.

I love how original her art is. Instead of doing something that everyone else is, she found a way to mix technology and art and create a different type of experience. Not only is it a completely different type of art work but she also found a way to incorporate sounds her voice and videos among other things to create a whole experience. Her work creates a combination of reality and fantasy.

Artist of the Week – Nikki S. Lee

Nikki S. Lee (Lee Seung-Hee) was born in 1970. Her style of art is a mix of photography and performance. She pushed limits and boundaries when it comes to group identities.

She moved to New York from Korea and started working for fashion photographer David LaChapelle. In 1999, she decided to move away from the fashion photography aspect and start her own art. She got a lot of recognition for her work from her first exhibition in New York.

Her Projects series are what sheis most known for and what we focused on in our discussion. In this series she focused on minorities and small social groups. She would dress up and act the way the social group she chose does and her transformation will be captured with a camera by a random person.

I really like this photo for two reasons. I used to skateboard and I think it is great that she included an activity that is seen as mostly guys’ thing in her project. Also, I like it because even though she is the artist and the photo is about her project, she is not the center of what is captured in the picture. She is just watching that guy do his trick and waiting her turn.

Total Makeover – Neighborhood Edition

For my architecture project I decided to used the area around my internship. I labeled my work building and the places where you can get food (the company I work for provides lunch and drinks all day). I was a little nervous before I started mapping it out on SketchUp because I wasn’t sure how it will turn out but luckily it was not as hard as I expected.
BlockThe change I want to see is that I want more places to get food and hang out outside of the company. It would be cool to have more opportunities to go and relax after work with co-workers or even go out for lunch since the food isn’t always what I would like to eat. That way there will be more to do than just stay in the building all day and I think it would be nice to get a chance to go outside for a little everyday.

Screen-Shot-2015-07-03-at-9.36.53-AMAlso, there is only one crosswalk so far and it is close to the Starbucks so if we add more places to eat and drink then we would have to add more crosswalks. All these ideas aside, I understand that it is smarter for a company to keep their employees in the building so they can work more but since I am stuck in a desk most of the day it would be nice to get to walk outside from time it time.

Victorine Meurent

Victorine Meurent was born in Paris in 1844. She was talented in many aspects. Besides modeling and being an artist she had a musical gift and played various instruments. She met an artist called Édouard Manet and became his artistic muse for the next ten years.

The painting, Olympia, by Édouard Manet is Victorine Meurent in the nude. She was portraying a prostitute. Unlike the common way at the time, Victorine’s face was very clear and precise. The model has a confident face in the painting which was her choice. Her decision to portray confidence is what makes people credit her as more than a model but also an artist in this painting.

After awhile, Meurent decided to do more than just modeling and became an artist herself. She appreciated a different style than Manet. A self portrait of hers got chosen for the Paris Salon’s annual show. Meurant had six pieces of art in the show all together.

Victorine was in financial trouble in 1890s. She tried selling art in the streets and tried getting money from Manet’s widow for the paintings of her he had sold. Later on things got better for her when she was admitted to the Société des Artistes Français. Only one of her works has survived as far as we know.

Spray Painting

This  week’s project was spray painting. I was excited to do it but I wish I was able to do it on an actual wall instead of paper. I bought a huge roll of thick paper and I was planning on putting it up on the wall to pretend that I am spray painting the wall but I was stopped by my mother who insisted that I do it on the floor in the backyard.

When choosing the spray paint I found out that this particular brand can also be used on flowers. I am definitely going to take advantage and use up the rest of the spray paint. Spray painting flowers can become an interesting part of a project.

I outlined the letters but was surprised that it was still pretty difficult. My hand wasn’t that steady so the letters look a bit crooked. I think graffiti artists are very talented and even though it is not really my style I would love to find a way to use the spray paint on a project that would fit my style.

3D Chair

I was very excited about this project. I’ve played with Photoshop and done a Web Design class so I have definitely had my fair share of digital design. I have never done anything it 3D though. It was exciting yet challenging trying to work with a program I’ve never seen before. I used SketchUp but I wish I looked into other programs. The free version I used was not very full of options. I got to play around with the tools and started creating a chair based on one I saw.

Then I restarted the project and made up my own chair. Once I had tried out a few of the tools it became easier to play around with it. Even though it became easier I still could not figure out a lot of it. I tried different things to improve my chair but it was hard to figure out how to do certain things.

Screen Shot 2015-06-19 at 8.48.22 PM

I wish I was capable of creating a more complex chair and I know that in the future I will try to work on projects with this or another software because I find 3D design to be challenging and fascinating. I can’t wait for when I can use the program to create something worthy or being printed out. As happy as I am that I created this chair, there is so much more I can do to improve it.

I was excited to find the feature where you can add already created objects to yours. I found this pillow and I figured adding it would help the chair look a little more realistic.

Overall I was really glad that I got to experience using such a program and I will definitely work more on it. I would love to come back to the blog and post my progress when I become better at it.

Think Outside the Box – Joseph Cornell

This week’s artist of the week is Joseph Cornell. He had a very unique way of expression. Instead of using a canvas to pain or making sculptures, his most famous pieces of art the boxes he used to put different objects in. He never went to school for art he has definitely proved himself as a respective artist. He uses everyday objects but they are not random cheap things he just finds laying around. He finds special things and groups them together to evoke different feelings and memories in people.

One of the pieces of art that I found interesting is the “Blue Sand Fountain.” I found the message he seemed to convey with it very fascinating. It attempts to show a frozen moment in time. The fact that the hourglass is broken to me represents his idea of people’s perception of time to be broken. The best part is that there could be many different interpretations.

Cornell used so many different objects from around the world so it was a surprise to me that he has not travelled that much. Even more, it was amazing how he could bring all these random objects he found in thrifts stores and make stories out of them. The fact that he hadn’t travelled made it interesting that this piece called “Pharmacy” used substances and objects from all around the world to possibly illustrate how different parts of the world have different ways and beliefs of healing.

This piece of art is my favorite. I like how he used the book as a box. It begs the question, why this book was so important to him. I also wonder if the subject of the book is part of the message or if the book in general is a symbol. To me the objects in the book represent aspects of his family and life all together. In a way the book was like a autobiography.

Artist of the Week – Francesca Woodman

Francesca Woodman was an artist who took her suffering and used it for her artwork. She spent her life depressed and suffered until she died, sadly very young. She had two attempts of suicide and the second was successful.

Her interest in photography began in school and she pursued that interest in design school late in her life. Her photography was focused on portraying sadness and emotions of struggle. She used black and white photographs to further emphasize those emotions. She usually was the subject of her own photographs and many times she was naked. Although, she was not wearing clothes, her exposing herself did not mean to be taken in a sexual way. She was exposing her pure self; her soul. Besides using black and white photographs, she used other things such as blurriness to emphasize her point of view.

The photograph above is one of her most famous works of art. She photographed herself hanging in a doorway. What makes it really interesting is that artists afterwards took that photograph and interpreted it. Thirty years after Francesca took that photograph, Maurizio Cattelan was inspired by that art and made a sculpture. That sculpture would be places in a crate, to be transported to another museum. Cattelan, another artist, decided to display the sculpture as it was placed in the crate. Doing so changed the message of the piece. Later on Vanessa Blaylock was inspired by the sculpture in the crate and created a 3D rendered model of it.

Although, now we pay more attention to her art, while she was alive, Francesca did not get as much attention. That contributed to her depression and eventually to her suicide. It is sad to see that her passion was not appreciated and at the end lead to her death.

Insta Project

It is very interesting to see what everyone’s days looked like. The differences and familiarities were very interesting.

screen-shot-2015-06-13-at-11-17-58-am

I was curious to see if what some people find an important part of their day was also an important part for others. For example, I assumed a lot of people will post pictures of their food because it is an important part of the day. On top of that food is also a common subject of instagram pictures. Even though, there were pictures of food, there were not as many as I would have imagined. The most interesting part was that every picture of food was a different type and it is crazy how trying out a new style of cuisine can actually be another person’s regular meal. Further more, it is not just different in different countries but even in the house next to you.

screen-shot-2015-06-13-at-11-50-08-am-e1434221529247

Another thing I was curious to see was how many selfies there will be. I was surprised that some people literally posted pictures of themselves without a real reason. Others posted pictures with their friends or family or even their pets.

It was also cool to see that while I was watching the NBA Playoffs, other people were watching the game as well. It’s such a crazy concept that everyone experiences different things throughout the day. We all have different plans and duties but once in a while people come together to do the same thing.
